REVIEW: Ethan Hunt Goes Emo in Patchy, Flashy Mission Impossible - Ghost Protocol

What does it take to revive a passion for one’s work, years on, whether said vocation is saving the world or churning out sequels in a blockbuster franchise? How does one reclaim human contact in today’s isolating, gadget-dependent world? These are questions IMF agent Ethan Hunt and his portrayer Tom Cruise face in Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol, Cruise’s fourth outing in the spy series, directed entertainingly enough by Pixar veteran Brad Bird. If the hoodied Cruise evokes a touch of Eminem-level moodiness in the posters, it’s with good reason: Stopping a maniacal supervillain may be on the docket yet again, but this time around Ethan Hunt has gone emo. Blame it on fatigue in a franchise that never consisted of much more than a series of set pieces and gadget porn held together with flimsy plot threads which all nevertheless managed to entertain, however superficially and evanescently, because of the charisma that Cruise exudes. The first Mission: Impossible film, based loosely on the 1966 television show, coasted to box office success in 1996, an engaging alternative to the flagging James Bond juggernaut; as for 2000’s unfortunate John Woo-helmed sequel — well, some missions are impossible, better left flailing in the distant past of cinematic memory. J.J. Abrams managed to reinvigorate the series with 2006’s Mission: Impossible III, but even then it seemed the creative juices had stopped flowing for both the franchise and its star. To Bird’s credit, his first foray into live-action feature filmmaking in Ghost Protocol opens on a cracking, near-wordless sequence that speaks to years spent perfecting visual storytelling in the Pixar fold: Descending upon a high security Russian facility, an impromptu prison riot erupts as a cover for the extraction of one Ethan Hunt, glimpsed only from behind, who lies coolly on his cot bouncing a makeshift rock-ball against the wall as chaos explodes around him. He mulls the idea of freedom. He hesitates. Then, finally, Hunt grudgingly exits his cell, placing the granite plaything back in the wall he carved it from with probably nothing more than his fingertips, presumably over the span of years of solitude — the same fingertips that used to cling to sheer cliff sides miles above the ground with no safety lines, just for kicks — and leaps into superman mode, shrugging his way through a comically breezy exit like it’s just another Tuesday at the office. He is still Ethan Hunt, of course, but something’s changed. He’s tired of the spy game. A bit jaded. He’s maybe, probably getting too old for this shit, and his failed relationship — did wife Julia leave him, or worse? — haunts him. When IMF tech-turned-field operative Benji Dunn (Simon Pegg) and a new lady agent (Paula Patton) excitedly bust Hunt out of his mysterious, maybe self-imposed seclusion for a new mission, he only reluctantly chooses to accept it. Said mission comes on the heels of a prologue operation gone wrong, in which Patton’s Agent Jane Carter loses her teammate/spy boyfriend Trevor (Josh Holloway) and a set of nuclear launch codes to a dastardly European assassin (La Seydoux). (French girls, they’ll do it to you every time.) Hunt and Co., tasked with breaking into the Kremlin on a related mission to track a shadowy terrorist named Cobalt, find themselves compromised and IMF scapegoated when the Kremlin is reduced to rubble in a brain-rattling explosion; disavowed by the American government and flying sans backup, with Jeremy Renner’s buttoned-up analyst-with-a-secret rounding out the team, the spy gang sets out on their real mission: Stop Cobalt, save the world from destruction, etc., yadda yadda yadda. As with every film in the franchise, the plot machinations are neither important nor realistic, let alone meaningful. Worse yet, they’re terribly cheesy. A Euro-centric baddie (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’s Michael Nyqvist, tragically reduced to cartoonish villainy) with designs on nuclear world war who wants to pave the way for a new world order? A well-heeled French assassin chick who murders in exchange for diamonds? So ’90s-era rejected Bond script, guys. Writers Josh Appelbaum and Andre Nemec even commit the facepalm-inducing sin of having poor Renner stand against a wall, stiff drink in hand, to recite key exposition to his teammates in order to explain secrets and backstory to the audience. (Renner gamely powers through, while Patton struggles to feign even the slightest bit of awkwardness as the film’s only heroine, a lethal spy crippled… by her inability to flirt.) In a way, the totally ’90s elements work within a larger sense of nostalgic self-awareness that flickers in and out of the film’s consciousness, with varying results. A broken Soviet payphone housing Hunt’s next IMF mission pays homage to the Cold War origins and dated gimmickry of the original series, though the nod inadvertently muddles Ghost Protocol’s tone. At least Pegg’s Benji offers a dose of sweet comic relief, leavening Cruise’s sulkiness with a clever charm that serves to show that the filmmakers are well aware of what got played to death in previous installments. (In a word: Masks.) Still, you get the feeling Bird longed for the days of workshopping those excellent Pixar tales at a studio full of experienced storytellers for months, maybe years even, as he dutifully leapfrogged over character development and tonal balance to nail the franchise’s real attractions: those admittedly eye-popping set pieces. Which brings us to the real reason you’ll want to see Ghost Protocol (and in IMAX, if your eyeballs can take it). Sure, the hand to hand combat scenes are choreographed with slick precision. A skin-scraping sandstorm chase will have you reaching for the eyedrops. And a bone crunching battle inside an automated parking garage is far more brutal than it sounds (if over-long and semi-boring). But marvel as Movie Star Tom Cruise grips the windows of Dubai’s Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world, doing his own insane stunts while clinging to the outside windows thousands of feet above the ground, and you get your money’s worth. (Cruise insisted on pulling off the Burj Khalifa stunt himself, which offers a hypothetical window into his mindset; if he wasn’t quite challenged by the material, maybe the adrenaline rush was worth signing on for? Well, that and the cash.) Unfortunately for Bird, while he delivers stunning and often inventive visuals, not to mention some ultra cool new gadgets worth drooling over, it’s producer J. J. Abrams who leaves the more indelible creative thumbprint. The slick exotic settings, the high-tech trappings, the capable spy wrestling with the crippling notion that loved ones risk becoming collateral damage — Sydney Bristow did all of this years ago, and on TV. Granted, she didn’t do any of it in glorious, dazzling IMAX. But she did it in heels! Abrams and Bad Robot partner Bryan Burk even imported former Alias writers Nemec and Applebaum and tapped Josh Holloway, continuing the bizarre convergence of the worlds of M:I and LOST, but that’s a discussion of worlds colliding for another day (see: Cruise cousin William Mapother in M:I2 for a taste of the mind-reeling madness). Then again, it could be just that kind of creative mix that gives the Mission: Impossible franchise the spark of life it desperately needed — and still needs, if it is to go on. Between Abrams’s genre instincts, Cruise-esque fearlessness, and the idea of Renner (and a slightly more engaging director, not to mention a better script) taking over in future sequels, Ghost Protocol the film illustrates exactly what Ethan Hunt learns at the end of his adventure even if it doesn’t quite achieve it: People — even top notch spies, or world class filmmakers — need people. Beneath the usual spy games and geekery lies a barely tapped vein that, sadly, remains largely untouched: The loneliness of the spy/human experience in an isolating, gadget-filled world. Note the deliberate proliferation of telephones, cell phones, comm units, and satellite feeds throughout, connecting our heroes to one another. Ponder the imagery of Cruise’s Hunt clinging to the side of a skyscraper hand outstretched, searching for a lifeline — and finding it in the strong, capable hands of his teammates. A lone wolf is a sad wolf! But with the right team, you can make any difficult job work. At least long enough to make it to the next payday. Follow Jen Yamato on Twitter. About This Time Diane Keaton Blew Off Jobs

Are you aware Diane Keaton and Jobs were neighbors once? That may go better: “And he begins speaking and all sorts of he’s speaking about may be the computer factor. The way the computer would take around the globe. And That I’m a slave to like, ‘OK, right.’ And that he keeps speaking about how exactly everybody will have some type of computer within their existence, within their world, within their home. And That I’m going, ‘Right, Right.’ And That I never saw him again ever, because clearly I simply wasn’t prepared for your. I figured, ‘Is he nuts?’ […] Are you able to imagine? How much of an idiot I had been.” [Ellen DeGeneres Show via THR]

A trio with Brio

Branagh's role as Olivier in 'My Week With Marilyn' revitialized his desire to act on film.Kenneth Branagh intends to devote more time to film acting in the immediate future -- "I had such a delicious time in ('My Week With Marilyn'), and I want to continue that," he says -- but he's choosing carefully and has yet to commit to his next role. In the longer term, he's developing three features as a director."Italian Shoes," adapted by Richard Cottan from the novel by "Wallander" author Henning Mankell, is about a reclusive old surgeon on a Swedish island who hasn't come to terms with his past mistakes. Anthony Hopkins and Judi Dench are attached to star. "Wallander" co-producers Left Bank and Yellowbird are aiming to shoot in late 2012 or 2013.Fox 2000 is developing "The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society," adapted by Don Roos from the bestseller by Annie Barrows and Mary Ann Shaffer. It's a love story set in London and the Channel Islands after WWII that Branagh describes as "a beautiful romance, very touching and uplifting." Producers are Paula Masur and Mitchell Kaplan, with Branagh's regular partner David Barron."In both cases, the nuance, delicacy and flavor is so based on the perfect casting," Branagh says. " 'Italian Shoes' is tailormade for Anthony Hopkins and Judi Dench. Finally, some movie suit news that doesn't involve 'The Hangover Part II.' In line with the Hollywood Reporter, Eastland Group has filed a suit in the filmmakers of '50/50,' proclaiming the film's title was stolen. EMG states it's been while using the "50/50" and "Phifty-50" title since 2000, which there's a typical law trademark on "50/50" (meaning the title is "never formally registered but potentially still known as intellectual property whether or not this was utilized continuously"). The label initially sent a request for the studio in September (the film was released on Sept. 30) to avoid using '50/50.' Clearly, that didn't work. THR also states that EMG is demanding "an enduring injunction against standby time with the title, the destruction of products where '50-50' is attached, plus an award of all of the film's sales and revenues consequently in the alleged breach." '50/50' has presently made $34 million. So ... meaning the complaintant wants everything? Unsure on whether EMG is suing individuals who make bets on gold gold coin movies. OSCARS: Brian Grazer & Robert Lorenz Open Files On Clint Eastwoods J. Edgar

This is the second production collaboration between Imagine Entertainment co-chairman BrianGrazer and Clint Eastwood’s Malpaso Productions partner Robert Lorenz. (The first was 2008s The Changeling). J. Edgar was surrounded byintrigue and intensity from the startof the film, which was turned down by Universal because the studio didn’t want to make another period film.A Malibu meeting between Grazer and Eastwood paved the way for Warner Bros to release this montha fascinating look at one of the most complicated figures in history, his abuse of power, and the demons that haunted him. Central to the movie is the incredible pedigree ofclint as a director Eastwood, and the powerful performances by Leonardo Di Caprio,Armie Hammer, Naomi Watts, and Judi Dench. Before J. Edgar hit theaters, AwardsLine contributor Ari Karpel spokewith Grazer and Lorenz to discuss biopics in the age of dirty Oscarcampaigns, Clint Eastwoods difficult-to-categorize politics, and the challenge ofmaking serious films in an often frivolous age: AWARDSLINE: Tostart, tell me about how this project came to be, from the beginning. Grazer: I thought it would be interesting tomake a movie about Hoover because hes such a complex character. He also, for the most part, originated theFBI.He certainly sustained it. So, I pitched it to Universal and they likedit.I met with writer Dustin LanceBlack and then pitched it to him.Hesaid hed been thinking about something similar. He likes power structures the same way I likepower structures. So while wewere developing it, Id seen Leonardo a couple times just casually. He was aware that we were developing Hooverwith Lance Black. He seemed excited bythe idea of either reading it or maybe even doing it.Script comes in and Universal chose not to doit.I suggested we give it to Rob forClint and for Rob himself.Wed alreadyhad a great work experience together on TheChangeling with Angelina Jolie. He readit, liked it and quickly talked to his partner over there, Clint Eastwood. They said were in. Then that got Leo tosay Ill do it. AWARDSLINE: The subject matter didn’t give anyone pause? Lorenz: Whatever work Brian and Lance had doneprior was working because the script came in and we both felt it was reallysmart and intriguing.Hoover, whomeveryones familiar with as the director of the FBI, is also this characterthats surrounded in mystery because hes hiding secrets and he has thispersonal life that everyone has questions about. It just seemed like a great subject for amovie. Grazer: I think that a lot of the subjects withinthe movie are relevant today and are even more relevant today in some ways. When Lancestarted writing it prior to Clint and Robs involvement, he did a lot of researchon it went to the FBI and then as Rob and Clint became involved, we justcontinued to research.Thats where alot of the story gets filled in because these guys are great.Clint and Rob are just great researchers. I think we made a point tohave it be as accurate as it possibly can be and settle in the aspects thatwouldnt overtake the central story. AWARDSLINE: Obviously,Lance who won an Oscar for his Milk screenplay, is a naturally political person and very progressive in his politics. Similarly, Clint is also a naturallypolitical person, though more conservative. Was that a kind of delicate dance in some way with this project? Lorenz: Well, I dont think so.People try to label him a conservative. But Im always impressed by how progressive afigure he is.I think if you look at thesubject matter in his choice of films over the last several years you canreally see that.I mean choosing to do Flags of Our Fathers and really sort ofglamorizing the Americans and that war and then countering that with theJapanese perspective was something that for a lot of veterans tensed them up tothink that Clint was going to try and tell their side of the story. They resent any need to do that. Grazer: I think hes singularly been sosuccessful at doing these great American tragedies.I dont know if either Rob or I have seenanyone else succeeding on his level; doing films that are so hard.He picks these really difficult and complexsubjects and finds ways to create cohesive movies that make sense. AWARDsLINE: Ofcourse were in such a polarized political culture, even in the Oscar races.Brian, from your experience withA Beautiful Mind — which wasprobably the most attacked movie in terms of the opposition — how does thatshape how you go into making a movie like this that is a likely Oscar contender? Grazer: Well, first of all, Rob and I canonly hope that its thought of with that kind of potential.Thatd be great. As far as ABeautiful Mind, I think controversy comes when you get pulled into therace. It wasnt really as controversialwhen we made A Beautiful Mind as itwas when people started competing with each other. On this movie, Clint has tackled such toughsubjects, so I thought he would be perfect for this not only as an artist butsomeone who always struggles and struggles and finds the truth insubjects.I think people, his criticsand people who work within the business; they all sort of feel that if anyonesgoing to try a tough subject and do it with honesty its going to be Clint. AWARDSLINE: Yousaid Universal didnt want to do this initially. Why was that? Grazer: Once Clint said hewas interested in doing it, Universal might have come to the same conclusion tomake it.But I think they werent goingto come to that conclusion that quickly; whereas, Clint read it and Rob read itand they had an enormous amount of passion and urgency. Clints pretty busy all the time, so Rob andClint and I, to some degree, took it to Warner Bros; they were ready to makeit right away. AWARDSLINE: Whatdid Universal struggle with? Was it thetopic, the budget or what? GRAZER: I dont know.I think its hard to get dramas made rightnow, right, Rob? LORENZ: Yeah.Thats the same thing Warner struggled with. There are restrictions on it in terms of thebudget size.It was a risky proposition that a historical drama was going to make back a big amount of money unless itturned out just right, which I think it has. GRAZER: A movie like this, everybody takes alot less money and a lot less of everything. You have to make it at a verysmart price. [Editors note: They claim J. Edgars production cost came in just under $40 million].In some ways, youre thinking I hope peoplesee it and like it or love it the way we love it. Youre not thinking of it the same way youthink of an event movie. You just cantframe it that way. AWARDSLINE: Now,certainly Clint’s obviously had incredible box office and Oscar success with MillionDollar Baby and Unforgiven.Itseems like his last few movies havent received the attention of the Academy thathis previous ones have.Im curious fromboth of you why you think that is. GRAZER: I think a lot of it is the subject andthe theme.I think this one has those andits also a tour de force. So, I thinkwe might have a chance. LORENZ: Weve been out there every year with aproject.I think enthusiasm goes backand forth.I think the timing is rightto open this particular project.

We recently sat down with legendary Anchorman mirth merchant Will Ferrell, to chat about his career so far.Talk lead to his upcoming political comedy, Southern Rivals, which will see him and Hangover breakout star Zach Galifianakis playing competing presidential candidates. When we asked Ferrell about the intriguing project, he was more than happy to spill the beans, telling us:"It's basically the story of a small time congressional district in North Carolina, in the south, and I'm the incumbent candidate who's about to run unopposed for my fifth term."There's even mention of me being considered as a candidate for Vice President and that's as high as my aspirations go. I just want to be Vice President and I have a wife who wants to be the Second Lady."We're politically hungry, and I'm cruising along until I leave what I think is a message on my mistress' voicemail but it's really just a random family and it blows up in my face. I'm seen as vulnerable for the first time and the opposition decides to run a candidate against me and that's Zach's [Galifianakis] character."But you know, the movie is just a platform for us to illustrate how insane our political process has become. The crazy ad campaigns that exist now and the manipulations. We're going to make it pretty farcical but not really that far from the truth."Ferrell is of course renowned for his spot-on take-off of George W Bush; will his Southern Rivals character be based on a real figure? Toronto Mayor Calls Police After Being Ambushed by CBC TV Crew

TORONTO - As if performing a farce by remaining perfectly serious, Toronto mayor Rob Ford rang the police Monday after being confronted by actress Mary Walsh and and a cameraman from the Canadian Broadcasting Corp.'s satirical news show This Hour Has 22 Minutes.our editor recommends'Everybody Loves Raymond' Director to Helm CBC's 'The Debaters''Hockey Night' power play bad news for CBC "I came out of my house and I was ambushed," Ford told reporters after Walsh, garishly dressed as intrepid journalist Marg Delahunty, unexpectedly showed up at the edge of the mayor's driveway, with a microphone in hand. "There was a lady dressed up and she was screaming my name: 'We got you Rob Ford, we got you,'" Ford, the poster boy for Canada's Tea Party movement, recounted. The mayor, accompanied by his five-year child, who he said was frightened by the incident, returned to his house and made a 911 call to the police. "When you come to my private house early in the morning and ambush me, I think that crosses the line," Ford added, with a remark that rang with Canadians questioning Tuesday why the CBC crew chose to confront the mayor at his home. CBC spokesman Chris Ball told the CBC.ca website that the This Hour Has 22 Minutes crew attempted to ambush Ford outside his home to shoot a segment for a future show. "These surprise interviews are what 22 Minutes are known for and have been a part of the show for years. The interview began at the end of his driveway and concluded shortly thereafter. The crew had no interaction with the Toronto police," Ball said. Most Canadian politicians, including former Ontario premier Mike Harris and former Canadian prime minister Jean Chrétien, take their confrontations with the Marg Delahunty character in their stride, and mostly smile broadly as Walsh delivers her comic lines in front of a TV camera. Walsh also famously ambushed former Alaska governor Sarah Palin during a U.S. book tour. But Ford served notice to Canadian satirical news shows not to doorstep him again, or else. "Don't come to my house. I just hope someone else doesn't do that again because I just don't want anything else serious to happen," he told reporters. Related Topics International Sarah Palin

Liz and that i aren't like this. We are able to suck this up. Even when we needed to walk, we are able to walk. I am not likely to request those who have nothing for something. It had not been worthwhile. ... Also, our father never drove. He was blind in a single eye, so he never got a license and that he walked literally everywhere. He was like, "Basically can perform it, it can be done.Inch He required the train every single day to operate and that we resided within the city, so he walked everywhere. Therefore we were really like, "OK, we are able to suck up and check out it."Amazing Race's Ethan and Jenna: We prefer SurvivorThen you saw a cabbie and requested him for any free ride?Liz: Yeah, first he chuckled within our face and was like, "Get free from here!" Finally, I believe he felt so harmful to us and that he required us midway.Marie: In the end were walking, we flagged cabs lower. Everybody just chuckled at us. It had not been like we were not asking [cabbies] the entire time, but simply not strongly. We do not regret that whatsoever. I was fine as we needed to walk completely. It was the luck from the draw finding both of these cabbies who'd drive us free of charge. So why do you like tigers a lot?Jessica: I really like them simply because they possess the nearest feelings to humans, so that they grieve like humans and they are so cute! I really like them! [Whenever we saw them] I dropped my backpack and merely went in to the water.Liz: Marie put herself in internet marketing! I was more happy compared to what they described on television. I was elated!Marie: Whenever we were driving we had an indication nevertheless "Baby tigers" and that we were really like, "No! George Romero to adapt novel The Zombie Autopsies

King of the zombies George Romero is currently writing an adaptation of a 2011 book The Zombie Autopsies: Secret Notebooks from the Apocalypse written by Steven C.Schlozman.Schlozman's novel shows that there's still life left in the overworked zombie genre, and we're pretty sure he's happier than a dead-head with a mouthful of brains that Romero's adapting it.The novel is about a group of scientists perform autopsies on zombies after a zombie apocalypse, making startling discoveries.Romero said "I've written and made films about zombies for over forty years. In all that time, I've never been able to convince my audience that zombies actually exist.""On page one of The Zombie Autopsies, Steven Schlozman takes away any doubt. This fast-moving, entertaining work will have you chuckling...and worrying."Romero has fallen in love with novel, dubbing it "Tense, graphic, accurate and shocking."At the moment, we're not sure if the inventor of the modern zombie movie will slot this adaption into his established undead franchise - Autopsy Of The Dead, anyone? - but one thing's for sure, we're ridiculously happy that he's returning to the genre he invented.

Elizabeth Olsen on Martha Marcy May Marlene and Growing Up in Hollywood

One of the biggest discoveries you’ll make this year — and one of this fall’s class of neophyte Oscar contenders — is 22-year-old Elizabeth Olsen. The younger sister of Mary-Kate and Ashley may have earned her first credits as a child actor in her siblings’ tween franchise-building movies, but she launches her very serious film career this October in the Sundance award-winning Martha Marcy May Marlene, Sean Durkin’s deeply observed drama-thriller about a shell-shocked young woman (Olsen) who reunites with her family after spending years under the influence of a sexually abusive cult. It’s a deceptively quiet film that builds a palpable feeling of unease anchored around Olsen’s central performance as Martha, who comes to live with her sister (Sarah Paulson) and brother-in-law (Hugh Dancy) but can’t shake the feeling that her former cult leader (played dangerously and charismatically by John Hawkes) and his network of volatile devotees are hiding around every corner, in every shadow. (Writer-director Durkin, making his feature debut, based his script from the real-life experience of a woman who went through similar trauma.) Olsen returns to NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts this fall to complete her senior year and will appear in a run of upcoming films in 2011 and beyond: Peace, Love and Misunderstanding, with Jane Fonda; the single-take horror remake Silent House, Olsen’s other Sundance 2011 entry; Rodrigo Cortes’ Red Lights, with Robert De Niro and Sigourney Weaver; Liberal Arts, opposite Josh Radnor; and Very Good Girls, with Dakota Fanning. She rang Movieline to discuss Martha Marcy May Marlene, how her acting training helped lay the groundwork for her subtle performance — and launched her, inadvertently, into her film career — and explained how she wound up earning those first few Olsen twin movie credits way back when. How did you find yourself first tapping into this character? Did you find yourself connecting to her as you read the script? There’s something that was really interesting that happened as I was reading it that I actually hadn’t experienced with other scripts, because it was also within the first six months of reading scripts and auditioning. Like when you’re reading a book in your head, you create this imaginary character, naturally. And it was my first time reading a script imagining myself instead of another character. Now, every time I read a script I try and make that happen, because it helps a lot to figure out or tell yourself, ‘Oh, I can do this,’ and then you end up reading it in a way that you would do it. Especially when reading a script in the third person, and in the case of Martha Marcy May Marlene, reading a character who is herself so opaque to begin with. Yes, totally! So when I read it, for some reason — it’s never happened before — I imagined myself as this character. And I think initially what I really connected to was her paranoia, actually. I had a lot of compassion for her and I wanted to make sure that she could never be diagnosed, or written off. That she was rooted in a reality where she needs something, she didn’t receive it, and she didn’t get it from her family. So then when I got the job I started trying to figure out how I could make things as simple as possible for something that goes in so many different directions. I tried to figure out a basic line to follow, which is that she has a void to fill, and her family didn’t provide that, yet she meets these people who care and love her and they provide the thing she’s been looking for — but then she becomes manipulated and learns that this isn’t the right place for her. So when she leaves, what does it mean for her to lose that? Sean [Durkin] and I would also talk about how it’s almost like domestic abuse; people don’t talk about, and aren’t able to talk about, the abuse. Even though you’re being abused you still go back to that person and it also takes away your voice, you won’t talk to other people about it because you know maybe they could think it’s wrong, but you don’t think it’s wrong… it was an interesting balance because there are so many different ways to relate to her problem, from so many different angles. Martha is also such an internal character; because of her loss of voice, as you say, she doesn’t reveal a lot of what happened to her with the cult to the people around her. How did you figure out how much to convey? It was an interesting balance, story-wise, when she releases what’s going on inside. When are the points that she becomes most frustrated. To me what was really important was that there’s so much not being said, there’s, like, not enough dialogue to use, that I needed to try as much as I could when she’s not speaking to always have some sort of clear action. So it’s not like she’s just moping and not doing anything. It was really important for me to always have a clear, fluid, moving action through a scene even if she’s being quiet. Because if that’s all kept under while she’s trying to keep a cool composure, if that’s all brewing underneath, then the audience can understand that she’s not truly present. Or if she is, that she’s clearly trying to figure out something else. That’s a lot of thought to go into such a natural performance, a deceptively methodical approach. Yeah, I approach a lot of things analytically. That’s kind of my most recent training, in conservatory at the Atlantic Theater Company — it’s all about analyzing and telling a story based on the script provided. It’s not so much about your own emotional life, it’s about how you can tell the story from an analytical point of view. I find that really helpful. It keeps you focused on what the goal is. Your sisterly relationship with Sarah Paulson feels particularly authentic in exploring how tumultuous an adult sibling relationship can be. Was that all in Sean’s script, or did you and Sarah work to give it all that unspoken conflict? It was all in Sean’s script, but because we filmed the stuff at the lake house after the cult stuff, she joined us upstate on our day off and we talked for a few hours about exactly what happened in our past together. How we communicated as a family, what was said — we talked as specifically as possible so that when there are things not being said and there are things that are more undercutting, they all were rooted in the same story. I think you can learn so much about someone’s family from what they don’t say. Sean has also talked about how it’s really true that in families, the things that need to be talked about or the things that are important to talk about, families don’t. They talk around it, they try to make light of the situation, they talk about things that don’t matter, but you can still tell how people relate to each other based on their history. And also, to top it off, Sarah and I got on super well. We had the best time together. I’ve never had more fun working with someone — we were such fools all the time, singing show tunes non-stop. And it helped that we could connect in that way, even though it didn’t manifest in the film. I think it was important that we were able to connect in that type of way just so there could clearly be some sort of longer connection, as opposed to something shallow. It’s like all of the good times between the sisters happened offscreen. Yes, exactly! [Laughs] We had such a good time and I can’t wait to see her soon, because she’s been working nonstop and I haven’t seen her in a while.

Ready For Transformers 4 AND 5?

Oh, and Micronauts...Given the amount of money the Transformers franchise comprises to now, there's no chance toy company Hasbro and film partners Vital would stop serving up juicy meat created from that cash cow. Now, within a normally dull-as-ditchwater earnings business call, the Hasbro brass has confirmed that which you all understood already: that everyone involved thinks about the problem about options for future Transformer activities. Nevertheless the actual news is the next factor might be to go to all Matrix/Pirates and shoot two new activities consecutive. In compliance to Variety, the companies will be in "active" discussions (we like to to think about meaning they get together and talk while finishing a hurdle course, but that could be a lot of fun) with Steven Spielberg and director Michael Bay about new films.Bay, clearly, has mentioned formerly that he'd would rather step in the series to give consideration with other projects. But he's usually been tempted to return having a) dump trucks of money supported to his house (he is not produced from stone!) and B) the chance to enjoy new filmmaking toys (even ones he wasn't clear on before, like 3d). Even though he seems to become devoted this time around around to coming back to non-robot Bayhem, for instance bodybuilding pic Discomfort And Gain, there's an opportunity he'll return.1 individual that likely won't return however, is Shia LaBeouf, who appears emphatic that he's moved onto alternative activities. That's a smaller problem for your studio, since everybody knows the punters appear for Optimus Prime and co anyway. Who could replace him? Whispers keep swirling about Jason Statham (who'd certainly be described as a large change), but that's all they are for the moment. What Vital includes can be a story idea cooked up by Dark In The Moon author Ehren Kruger, the professionals are apparently happy with. It remains to look when the two-TF film plan computes so when Bay does indeed sit inside the director's chair, particularly if he must make two movies simultaneously. In related Hasbro property news, the business bakes an offer with Zombieland authors Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese to use on turning Micronauts in to a movie.Micronauts, just just in case you have not learned about them, originated from just like a effective but ultimately short-were living toy line known to as Microman in Japan. It is not Wernick and Reese's first Vital project: furthermore they written the script for GI Joe 2: Retaliation...And talking about Zombieland (it's a three-link story! Somewhere an angel will get drunk inside a bar!), it seems the new the new sony is actually heading down another path with any possible follow-because the studio's TV division as well as the Fox network are really developing a comedy series good movie, which Wernick and Reese would write. Strangely enough, the duo initially planned the concept just like a Tv program, so they have got a few ideas worked out. Producer Gavin Polone notifies the Hollywood Reporter once the series can get the greenlight, it'll replace any plan to produce a follow-up film.
